Internet Dating Stories: Bizarre Dates

Just Wanted Out
Posted on October 1, 2003
Susan wrote: I'm so glad to have found this site. I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me, since I keep attracting these COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSERS.

My most recent dating horror was with a man in Portland. We met online through Yahoo! and started talking about 5 months ago. He was way into pursuit and actually wanted me to drive over and meet him within two days of first talking to him. After about four months of talking online, we arranged a meeting in Portland, which is 7 hours away from where I live.

My antenna went up when he insisted I meet him at his apartment. We finally compromised on a restaurant nearby. The first meeting went well and we arranged to have a date the next night. I am totally unfamiliar with Portland, so I was astounded when he called the next day and told me if I "wanted to see him," I had to drive to his apartment again. I sighed, but went along with it. The date consisted of a walk in a nearby park, then going back to his apartment, where he tried to get WAY TOO PERSONAL. After I refused to sleep with him, he went out for take-out pizza, then we sat in his apartment watching part of a 4-hour documentary on Teddy Roosevelt. He put me on the train back to my sister's house. I saw him online three days later and told him if he wanted to see me before I left town, I could stop by on my way out of town Sunday. He said that would be great! (We corresponded for months and every sentence ended with an explanation point. It should have tipped me off.)

I arrived at his apartment Sunday and knocked on the door about 10 times. I got ticked off and tried to call him from a nearby pay phone, but got a busy signal, so I decided if he was going to dump me, I was going to force him to do it in person. When I went back to his apartment, I stood out of range of the peephole and knocked again. He answered and was totally happy to see me, kissed me, said he was sorry he overslept and wanted very much to see me again. This when I KNOW he had been ducking my visit 5 minutes before. I left quickly. He told me the next day that he missed me, yada yada yada. Two weeks later, he said he didn't feel "romantic" toward me and that he thought I wanted more from the relationship than he did.

Not really. All I wanted from that relationship was OUT!
