I told him that I was expected at a party around 9 or 10 that night, but I'd be happy to meet him for a drink at 7.
He showed up 20 minutes late. We were having a nice, OK conversation and he asked if I'd have dinner with him. I asked if he'd like to go somewhere else (the menu was a bit pricey for my pocketbook), but he said no.
By the time he was on his thrid Glenlivet on the rocks, he asked me if I wanted to go away some weekend to Vegas. Not only that, he said he'd take me shopping before the trip and buy me some short skirts and 5-inch heels so he could show me off around town -- it was a fantasy of his. I was considering looking to ditch out of a back door, but I laughed it off and asked him, "Have you ever tried walking in 5-inch heels?" I ate the rest of my chicken Caeser salad in silence while he ate his steak and watched the hockey game on the TV across the room at the bar.
When the bill came, he left the folder open for quite a long time, then nudged it toward me. I ignored it. Finally, he asked me, "Does that say $65?" I replied: "Can't you read?" I don't think he was too happy about paying the bill.
Needless to say, I went off to the party alone. |
